Here’s something to help to keep us out of maya: a transcendental boombox for the 21st century!
1. Purchase the following from Walmart.com or from your local Walmart store:
Philips DC185/37 iPod Docking Boombox - US$59.98
Now you have a nice sounding boombox with no moving parts (superior reliability and lower power consumption) with the ability to play FM radio or to play an existing non-iPod MP3 player through it’s AUX (auxiliary) input.
2. Purchase the following, or something similar from Lexar.com or from your local Walmart store. (Any flash drive will work as long as it can hold 2GB, but I like the Lexar FireFly because it is very compact and because it has a very cool blue LED that shines through it’s end, which, when plugged into the boombox’s USB port, becomes the top end.):
Lexar 2GB FireFly USB JumpDrive - US$14.99
Now, after copying them to the flash drive, you can play all of Srila Prabhupada’s music MP3s using the boombox’s USB port. You can even play them in shuffle mode. Then you never know which song is going to play next! But, make sure that you get the MP3s from http://causelessmercy.com/_PrabhupadasMusicMP3Links.htm because it’s the only place where you can get versions that have the songs and the purports combined into single files. (Otherwise it wouldn’t make sense to play them in shuffle mode, because the purports would no longer correspond to the songs.)
I measured the power that the unit consumes playing a flash drive at room filling volume, and it only takes 4 watts!
3. After you’ve saved up some more money, purchase the following from Walmart.com or from your local Walmart store:
iPod 16GB nano - US$197.88
As an alternative, you could purchase a 16GB or a 32GB iPod touch, but they are even more expensive.
After loading up the iPod with all of Srila Prabhupada’s lectures and conversations (http://causelessmercy.com/_PrabhupadasMP3Links.htm), you can play them in shuffle mode as well. The nice thing about using an iPod for the lectures / conversations instead of another flash drive is that you can turn the boombox off or even pull the AC plug, and the next time that you turn it on it will continue playing right where it left off! In fact, you don’t even have to press the play button. It will continue right where it left off the second that you press the power button! It will also continue playing right where it left off if you switch to the USB flash drive and back again!
Another thing that I like about this particular boom box is that the iPod is completely recessed, so you can carry it around without having to worry about a protruding iPod getting caught on something.
I purchased two of the above boombox setups, one for the kitchen, and one for the bathroom!
